Umbria is full of ancient towns, the so-called “borghi”. They date mostly from the Etruscan or Roman times and preserved their medieval atmosphere. Most of them are located on hill-tops, making them more defensible. Almost every “borgo” is worth a visit. I name but a few of the most famous: Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Todi.
